*bōk- : book review in this bookless age

Exhibition Period: 8 August 2008–21 September 2008
Opening: 8 August 2008 (Fri), 7:00-11:00 pm
Venue: 1a space
*Bōk is the Germanic root of the word BOOK, where the Old English "bōc" comes from; It is an instrument for carrying messages, history and wisdom; *bōk- also has its ability to create certain ambience with its poetic uniqueness. One can feel the aura of books even without reading them.
They are part of the definitions.
What else….and what next?
The exhibition features 6 international artists who all are Chinese but were with different cultural background. They are invited to regard this project as a conceptual challenge, to respond by re-defining ‘book’ with reference of their experience and to engage in an experimental dialogue with it. This process of redefining, remixing, recreating and responding to ‘book’ is a mean of pushing the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm and re-examining the value, the role and the cross-disciplinary possibilities of the existing forms of ‘book’ in this contemporary age.
“The soul of a book” is not a too far-fetched metaphor. The art project offers an opportunity for the general public to reflect upon it and come up with their own conclusions. For project details, please click bookless-shelf.blogspot.com

Bond, Agent Bond. pre-exhibition workshop on 6/14
Date: June 14, 2008 (Sat)
Time: 3-5pm
Venue: 1a space
This pre-exhibition workshop, conducted by
Desmond Teo and
Francis Poon, will act as an introduction to the understanding of the core concept of the artists’ works. With Desmond’s session involving the banal use of playing cards, participants will get to understand the fundamentals of his art practice.
During the break of this open-to-public game, Francis will do a performance with the practice of a tea ritual. “First slowing their paces and keeping their heads bowed, their attention is then led to humble interaction and communication.” Despite that the participants are total strangers, they will be inspired to open up and talk about anything.
